“Unstoppa-Bull” Wairarapa Bush Under 20 Defend 2023 Title

With a sweeping 38 points to 5 victory over Horowhenua Kapiti at Bulls RFC today under blue skies and after an overnight frost, Wairarapa Bush earned their third Under 20 title in 10 years, successfully defending their 2023 title and completing a clean-sweep of their three Series fixtures.

In the 10th anniversary year of the Series, Poverty Bay also had their best ever performance, finishing in second place overall following a hard fought 34 points to 26 victory over Whanganui, who uncharactertiscally failed to win a game in the 2024 Series.

In the match played on the No. 1 ground at Bulls RFC, Wairarapa Bush flew to a 26 points to nil half-time lead, with No. 8 for the victorious side, Mitieli-Ezekiel  Waqa, also being named Player of the Series by the Series selectors. In total, Wairarapa Bush scored 105 points in the Series, only conceding 48 over the three competitive games they played.

On the No. 2 ground, Whanganui proved stern opposition for Poverty Bay, with the lead changing on a number of occasions throughout the game. A try to Poverty Bay with 10 seconds of running time when the teams were only three points apart clinched the match, with Poverty Bay finishing Series runner-up, scoring and conceding 84 points in the Series overall.

Bulls RFC, (the home club of J J Stewart), who celebrate their sesqui-centennial were excellent hosts of the Series for the second consecutive year, opening their club facilities, providing superb catering and well-manicured fields  for the four participating teams. With thanks also to the Match Officials who ensured all fixtures were played to and within the spirit of the law.
