Hurricanes Under 18 Win Close Crusaders Encounter …
In their third annual match, the Hurricanes Youth Rugby Council Under 18 Team recovered from a two point deficit at half-time to win their match against the Crusaders Knights by 25 points to 10.
Two tries to openside flanker Josh Southall (SPC, Silverstream) and a further five-pointer to tighthead prop Kaliopasi Uluilakepa (Petone RFC) were scoring highlights for the home team at Westpac Stadium, who played the curtain-raiser to the main Super Rugby match between the two franchises.
Nelson College’s Leicester Faingaanuku was the first try-scorer with a scorching run down the left wing side, with Fergus Burke (St. Paul's Collegiate) adding the conversion and a penalty. In addition to the tries scored by the Hurricanes, Danny Toala (Hastings BHS) scored two penalties and two conversions.
The Crusaders played their best rugby in the first-half of the match, with the Hurricanes bench providing more energy and direction in the second-half compared to their opposition.
The final score was 25 points to 10 (HT: 8 points to 10).
In their first two encounters, the Hurricanes Under 18 side had run away convincing winners and not since 2014 when the team played the Wellington Under 19 side winning by 5 points to 3, had the score been this close. Congratulations to the Hurricanes Coaching and Management Team of Darren Larsen, Sam Rasch, Nick Reid, Joel Marshall, Matt Doonan and Seti Tafua.
