Council Rugby Round-Up – 24 August 2024
Central Region Shield
In the first round of the 2024 Central Region Shield, defending holders Wellington withstood a spirited comeback from Manawatu at Rugby League Park to win by 29 points to 22, after leading 21 points to 12 at half-time. In Napier, the score was less close, with the Hawkes Bay side romping to a 75 points to 14 win against the Hurricanes Heartland Under 20 side, after leading 28 points to 7 at half-time.
2024 is the tenth anniversary of the Competition in its current form, first played in 2014, (it was not played in 2020 owing to the COVID pandemic). In 2015, the concept of a "Barbarians" team was introduced as the fourth team in the Competition. This was replaced by the Hurricanes Heartland Under 20 team in 2017, (now in its seventh season). Of course, the history of the Central Region Shield goes back much further, (40 years in fact!), to 1984.
Hurricanes Cup & Rex Kerr Cup
It will be an all Manawatu final for the Hurricanes Cup in 2024, with defending champions Palmerston North BHS seeing off a challenge from Wellington champions St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, by 30 points to 19, after leading 13 points to nil at half-time.
At Feilding High School, the hosts won by 28 points to 14 against Gisborne HS.
In the Rex Kerr Cup, perennial rugby powerhouses Manukura and St. Mary’s College will compete the 2024 Rex Kerr Cup title, at the Petone Recreation Ground, next Wednesday. Last week, St. Mary's College defeated Hastings Girls' High School by 50 points to 24, to book their place in next week's Final.
